How do you see your future

Trainees are vital to Martineau's future and no effort is spared to give the best possible experience and support to them, whilst treating them as individuals. There is a very high retention rate at the end of training contracts, when trainees are generally offered roles in their preferred departments and specialisms.

Martineau's aims is to work in partnerships with trainees, providing them with mentoring, supervision, support and an exposure to the key areas of the firm's practice. Trainees are actively encouraged to be an integral part of the team delivering legal solutions to its clients whilst benefiting from quality work, flexible seat rotation in a small and friendly team environment.

Rachel Phelps, Trainee Solicitor

"The mentoring scheme provides the opportunity to voice any concerns you have on an informal basis. It provides a friendly sounding post and gives you the chance to meet somebody for lunch on a social level, all at the expense of the firm!"

"Sitting with your supervisor may sound a bit daunting, but it is the ideal learning experience. You benefit from the wealth of knowledge of your supervisor, learning from them essential skills such as client care."
Rachel Phelps, Trainee Solicitor

Andrew Adams, Partner

"The ideal trainee is someone who shows enthusiasm, commitment and honesty in their work and there is no shortage of opportunities to make your mark and to progress at your own pace"
Andrew Adams, Partner and Head of Commercial Disputes Management

Robert Newman, Trainee Solicitor

"Each of the partners at Martineau, who are allocated trainees to supervise, make a great effort to ensure that every trainee enjoys a broad experience of the work undertaken in the team. All of my supervisors have been friendly, approachable and keen to see that I get as much client contact as possible. Both Martineau's Birmingham and London office are open plan and therefore as a trainee you usually sit on a pod of four fee-earners which are made up of Solicitors, Associate and Senior Associates. The supervising partner will then sit on a separate desk adjacent to the pod, so not only do you have day-to-day contact with all levels of fee earner, but you can also pick up great tips from just watching and listening to your colleagues at work.

Each trainee is also allocated a mentor, who has been carefully selected as someone who is easy to talk to and very approachable. Your mentor will not be a partner but rather an experienced Solicitor or Associate who knows the firm well and will be able to help you if you experience any problems in any of your seats as a trainee. Frequently the mentor will offer to take you out for lunch to make sure you are settling in well and that you do not have any concerns."
